[Excellent great. Not talking about things is William's favorite. No actually that is a lie, he is always talking about things that cause psyduck, but for the present purpose and digital company, he restrains himself.]
I hadn't thought about an internship program at all, to be honest, [he says.] We've got a trainee who's she's working herself to the point of fucking exhaustion and always trying to do extra laundry and shit. And we've had volunteers, as-- [swerve swerve swerve] --you probably are aware. What do you mean 'internship?'
[ Vaguely, she feels a little self-conscious, because she's not proactive in this respect and running it by a department head before she has it wired into the proper framework is a bit like taking a car out for a test drive when it's missing both breaks and wheels, but. It's not talking about what happened a few days ago. ]
It would be a way for new arrivals to kind of figure out what department they should be in. I know I'm not really suited for the one that I chose, but I chose it because everyone should be doing something here to help keep this place running, and I didn't know what else to do or what I was good at, where I'd be a good fit. I mean, we already have to worry about dying every other day because someone peed in a disembodied smiley face's Cheerios. The last thing that we need is to die because there weren't enough bodies in Engineering. Obviously if you know what you're good at or where you wanna be, then fine, it's not necessary, but for people who don't... maybe it would help.
That's true. The only reason not to, I'm sure, is it's easier to rely on nanites to sort us. And give us access.
But convenience ain't excuse for laziness. [William sounds to be giving it real thought.] Plenty of the equipment ain't locked up against extradepartmental passengers. So it'd be like an academic semester or two then the intern would either fuck off or choose to stay on? Is that what 'internship' means?
Sort of, yeah. I figure they could have their initial pick of two departments, based on experience, interest, that kind of thing. If the first doesn't work out, go to the second. If that doesn't work out... well maybe there should be some kind of custodial arts program.
That's a good notion, [William says thoughtfully. He doesn't think most people think to sign up at Medbay without pre-Tranquility specialization. Cora is rather singular in that way.] Could help the passengers decide. I known a few who been hesitating. It'd be inter-departmental, then.
Do you need help organizing such a program?
[Look at you, Bennet. Leadership clearly runs in the family, if you want to be a little bit essentialist about it.]
I hesitated for a long time on it, personally. [ To be fair, though, sometimes if Claire doesn't get a push in the right direction by some outside source, she ends up standing still. She's never known what she wanted to do other than help people and jump in front of trains. Not a lot of overlap in that. ] Hence my whole... asking you about medical training stuff. Still don't know if that's what I should be doing. Still think it sounds like a better fit than agriculture. It's just... trying on different hats. And yes, inter-departmental.
[ She takes a moment to scratch her fingers through her hair. ]
I might, eventually. I've been thinking about it for a while, but it's still in the conception stages. Once we get enough of a break in between disasters, hopefully I'll be able to put it to paper, so to speak. I wouldn't mind having a couple of eyes to run it by before I approach the other department heads about it. I'd like to have everyone on board.
[ No one tell Nathan or Noah. They might get all proud dad. ]
[Starting an internshpi program, perfect hair, dying Snape, raising five hundred dogs. Is there anything Claire can't do?
Makes it easier to accept defeat, really.] I can look at it if you like, though it sounds a bit more like Natasi's bag. She's the seven foot platinum blonde lady who handles our computers and a lot of the administrative stuff. [William thumps around audibly.] It's a bloody good idea. You really ought to push it through. I seen a few passengers wasn't sorted because they just weren't sure.
Seven foot? This close to the floor, I thought she was at least nine and a half. [ No one loves a good short joke more than Claire Bennet. ] I've met her a couple of times under various circumstances. She seems pretty self-possessed.
[ A quality that Claire both admires and finds herself a little intimidated by. ]
Thanks. I'm going to try. Organizing ideas into words isn't my favorite thing. I'd rather just do something instead of writing out every detail, but that's easier said than done. Maybe I'll run in by the both of you, if you really don't mind. [ Because. Er. ] Too many eyes is better than not enough.
[That's very nice of her. Very practical, and accepting in spite of the everything in the corridor not long ago; as mild and funny as a regular person, in spite of the deceptive quality of her hair. Severus has good taste. Which is better than him having bad taste, William decides, even if that possibly could have worked out more in his favor.]
Sounds good. I'll have a look at it whenever it's time.
Alright, thanks, William. I'll be in touch. About that and about the medical training thing. I definitely want to take a stab at that.
[ She's more accepting, in a sense, about what happened in the hall, being more capable of not finding William culpable. She's sure that he didn't know the extent of what has happened between Severus and Remus - maybe now he does - and she also has a much higher opinion than Severus does of himself. It's easier for her to look over it, even if she doesn't forget it. ]
And, you know. I appreciate you contacting me in the first place, after that whole encounter in the hallway. Not everyone's professional enough to do that.
[It discomfits him that she chose to bring their conversation back to the thing. He was rather hoping they'd come to a tacit agreement about not talking about it again, possibly ever. All the discomfiture in the world, though, can't really have William pretending that isn't an awfully nice gesture.]
Thanks. I mean-- well, I don't know what else to fuckin' say, but. Thanks.
[A beat.]
You're probably the first person in the whole universe to give me praise about that.
[ That's an understatement. Maybe her tone indicates as much. Suspecting that William doesn't know shit - or didn't know shit - about what's transpired between Severus and the rest of them makes it easier to look beyond it. ]
You could have just let it go and never said a word to me ever again about anything, and made the whole process of me hoping to get medical onboard with this whole placement idea thing seriously unpleasant. You didn't. That says a lot.
William is very conflicted, but not about what's important right now. He shuffles around on his seat, which fortunately she can't see because of the audio.]
All right all right, you're making me blush, [he says, in a tone of complaining.] Chief Officers don't fucking blush, so we're putting a moratorium on that right now, yeah?
Your secret's safe with me. [ Which means she should probably stop making him prolong the conversation. ] I'll let you go, in the meantime. I'm sure you have plenty of work to do that absolutely doesn't involve blushing.
